National Science Week 2010

Mpumalanga is one of South Africa’s provinces that is faced with enormous challenges in education, in light of this, Osizweni Education and Development Centre, a Sasol sponsored initiative, has been appointed as one of the grant-holders to host National Science Week (NSW).
This year, the focus week will be from 2-7 August 2010, as declared by the Department of Science and Technology and will run on the theme: ‘The Role of Science in Economic Development.’
Osizweni has been the biggest host of this project in Mpumalanga since 2002 and the number of visitors during NSW is growing rapidly. In 2009 Osizweni hosted close to 9000 visitors and hopes to increase this number in 2010.
During this week, Osizweni will feature 50 different programmes that will offer learners, educators and the general public exciting opportunities to experience science and technology in a creative and entertaining way.
The activities include amongst others; learner workshops, hands-on experiments, science shows, public lectures, educational puppet shows; science competitions, indigenous technology, career mentoring and edutainment activities for toddlers.
The major draw cards will undoubtedly be the newly opened interactive science centre at Osizweni; Sasol’s exhibition on petrochemical technology, science and field trips to the SASOL Plant in Secunda.
Osizweni will also unveil their fully fledged Career Guidance Centre; this vibrant centre will provide a career exploration area where, through the use of multi-media, learners will be able to get a true sense of the workplace and what it entails. A resource area will provide both learners and educators with all the resources they could possibly need.
The NSW programme will bring together exhibitors from academic institutions; technology-based companies and government departments. They include ESKOM; Rand Water; WET (Water Educational Techniques); CASIO; BEST (Black Engineers & Scientists Trust); South African Police Service, SAQA, Highveld Medi Clinic, University of Johannesburg, ICASA, ER24, LoveLife, Bloodbank, the Joint Aviation Awareness Programme, Honeywell, the departments of Agriculture and Education and many more.
About National Science Week
National Science Week (NSW) is an initiative of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), implemented since 2001, which aims to excite our youth with science at an early age and to encourage them to develop an interest in studying mathematics and science subjects. Whilst placing emphasis on our youth, awareness is also created amongst those sectors of society bearing an influence on the subject and career choices of learners.
The implementation of this annual country-wide event is coordinated by the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA).
Key objectives
• to contribute to the development of a society which values and appreciates Science, Engineering & Technology (SET)
• to provide a platform for scientists to engage each other and also to engage with the non-scientific community
• to promote partnership between media and scientists
• to profile the work of the DST and its priorities
• to attract learners to SET career (including research)
Osizweni will host NSW on its premises, at old Bracken mine on the Evander/Embalenhle road. For more information contact Angela Ford 0716879848.
