SASOL

Sasol Secunda invests substantially in community capacity building, poverty alleviation and sustainable development in the Mpumalanga Province. Sasol in Secunda ensures that its community is fully supported through its various Corporate Social Investment initiatives and education is one of the key focus areas.

The Osizweni Education and Development Centre is supported by Sasol because it provides much needed assistance to mathematics, science and technology educators and learners in our region.

Hewlett-Packard

Osizweni is an HP Innovation in Education grant recipient which is part of HP's drive to advance innovation in education as part of HP's Social Investment strategy. More than 1,000 educational institutions in over 40 countries across the globe are engaged in technology projects as a result of grants given by HP, encompassing a total investment of nearly US$60 million over the past five years. HP has donated more than US$250 million in cash and equipment to schools, universities, community organisations and other non-profit organisations around the world since 2000.The Innovation in Education Grant Initiative rewards secondary schools and universities for their revolutionary teaching and learning projects. HP's ultimate objective is to foster future leaders in the disciplines vital to the global economy. The grants given to secondary schools aim to improve student achievement by using technology to redesign the learning experience; while for universities, the aim is to specifically enhance the engineering, computer science and IT degree programs.

Dow

Osizweni is an education and development program in Secunda, Mpumalanga. The program focuses on tutoring students in Mathematics and Science, two subjects identified by the national Department of Education in South Africa as critical to the country's economic and skills development. Early in 2008 Dow donated a mobile lab to help facilitate practical science experiments to underprivileged students in the area thereby providing a more exciting teaching environment and inspiration for the young learners.

The need for the Dow Mobile Science Laboratory stems from the fact that many underserved schools continue to produce very poor pass rates, with average symbols obtained in mathematics and the sciences being particularly poor.

ABSA

Absa noted that the projects run by Osizweni are open to learners across all age groups as well as educators in the district.

The centre is one of the most proactive and progressive institutions in the province in mathematics, science and technology.

The program enjoys a good back up from Sasol both financially and in terms of human capital. Absa saw this project as one of the viable vehicles to be supported in order to contribute towards the improvement of mathematics, science and technology in the province, particularly in the Gert Sibande District and Nkangala District.

Honeywell

The Osizweni Education and Development Centre, based in Secunda Mpumalanga is a centre with a difference. Its mandate is to find young students with a flair for Maths and Science from the surrounding communities and offer assistance to them to pursue their studies in a "mentorship hands-on" environment so that they may return to their communities as qualified Maths/Science teachers by becoming influential role models to the communities growing generations.

Honeywell's business culture, goals and activities are founded on these concept and pursuit of sustainable development and advancement of previously disadvantaged communities within where its business operates and the sustainability of these programs. The centre currently trains many scholars from the surrounding areas in Mpumalanga province (Secunda, Embalenhle, Delmas etc). Honeywell therefore committed itself to assist Osizweni Education and Development Centre by sponsoring 4 Maths & Science learners on a full scholarship with Unisa.

This program provides a full scholarship for teacher training through UNISA Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics and Physics or Chemistry. This degree is then augmented by a post graduate diploma in education (PGDE) offered on the final year of study. Honeywell's desired outcome in respect of corporate responsibility is to invest in the communities in which we work and to function as a responsible corporate citizen.

Honeywell started sponsoring this program in 2007 with 2 learners and now in 2010 we have 4 learners. The centre enables sustainable development to attain competency and performance in Maths, Science and Technology training and it ties well with Honeywell's goals and objectives.
