Launched in 2013, KPMG and Osizweni Science Centre
started the Accounting Academy that has been successfully running for the past
six years. This Academy was initiated after the partnership between KPMG and
Osizweni extended beyond the financial services KPMG offers and looked into how
the community can be impacted from the partnership.
Since KPMG has highly skilled employees in
Accounting, a model was created whereby monthly workshops are hosted for Accounting
teachers in the Standerton Sub-region. The Department of Basic Education has
assisted in advising what content should be taught and workshops are uniquely
designed accordingly.
Empowering a teacher with additional knowledge is
the most sustainable manner in which to address the challenges we see in the
education system. The impact of this initiative can be seen in the continuous learners
and schools performance.
At
the end of each academic year, a recognition ceremony is held to acknowledge
teachers who attend all the workshops. This year’s ceremony was held on 24
October 2018 at the Fortis Hotel in Evander. Andrew Lumley representing KPMG
said “We
are very proud to be a part of this Academy in collaboration with Osizweni
Science Centre and we are proud of the impact it has made. We are excited for
the future”
In 2019 the workshops will be hosted in Standerton,
all Accounting GET and FET teachers are invited to attend. Should you require
additional information, kindly contact Mr Gontse Pai, Mathematics Specialist at
the Osizweni Science Centre on 017 689 2007.
