16TH Regional Congress of the Association for Mathematics Education of South Africa

The Association for Mathematics Education of South Africa (AMESA )- a professional association for Mathematics Education in South Africa founded in 1993 is the voice of Mathematics Education in South Africa, representing the interests of the discipline and its members at national and provincial level.

Every year the Mpumalanga region hosts its own AMESA regional conference which this year took place from the 05th to the 06th May 2018 at Hoerskool Nelspruit Mpumalanga.

The AMESA conference mostly seeks to assist members dealing with issues in Mathematics Education such as: How to teach a specific topic, assessment in Mathematics, curriculum developments etc.

This year Osizweni had the privilege of not only participating as a member of the dynamic association but as an executive member in the AMESA Mpumalanga Region. An executive position of the Regional Secretary is held by Osizweni through one of our employees Matlhomola Xaba, who was elected therein on the 15th Provincial Congress, in May 2017. This honourable position was earned through various outstanding roles for which Osizweni is famous, these include among others:

Educator development – a bursary scheme for new and existing educators who wish to enrol or further their studies in the field of Mathematics & Physical Science. Informal teacher workshops are held in an effort to up skill teachers.

Mobile Laboratory Services – an initiative aimed at assisting rural schools with no proper laboratories and Science facilities with curriculum based experiments.

Also, over the years Osizweni is known in the region for its role as a partner of the Department of Education in Mpumalanga through its various roles and interventions in Gert Sibande District and recently focusing in the Standerton Sub-Region.

“We as Osizweni are very grateful that we get to be actively involved in the betterment of AMESA. It is a role that we are honoured to fulfil, for even Before Osizweni had a representation in the Executive we use to actively play the role of a supporter and sponsor, responding to the request from the representatives of the Association from time to time” Matlhomola Xaba (Osizweni Mathematician)(Regional Secretary of AMESA).
